People Tree People Tree was founded in Japan in 1995 after founder Safia Minney had worked with the NGO Global Village in Japan and it came to England in 2001. People Tree works closely with 50 Fair Trade groups in different countries around the world, helping alleviate poverty in the world's most marginalised communities. They work hard to ensure that they pioneer ecologically sound methods of production and minimise environmental impact. Most of People Tree's cotton is certified organic and Fair Trade and all of their clothes are dyed using safe and natural dyes. People Tree not only use the labour in the countries they work in, but also use local skills and traditional techniques such as hand-woven fabrics, hand screen printing and hand embroidery. People Tree's Mission Statement: - To support producer partners' efforts towards economic independence and control over their environment and to challenge the power structures that undermine their rights to a livelihood. - To protect the environment and use natural resources sustainably throughout their trading and to promote environmentally responsible lifestyles and environmental initiatives to create new models to promote sustainability. - To supply customers with good quality products, with friendly and efficient service and build awareness to empower consumers and producers to participate in Fair Trade and environmentally sustainable solutions. - To provide a supportive environment to all stakeholders and promote dialogue and understanding between them. - To set an example to business and the government of a Fair Trade model of business based on partnership, people-centred values and sustainability. People Tree's Fair Trade Credentials: - People Tree has been a member of International Fair Trade Association (IFAT) since 1996. - Most of People Tree's organic cotton also carries the FAIRTRADE Mark - All People Tree's organic fibre is certified in India by Control Union (an international Dutch based organic certification body). - People Tree are working with The Soil Association to have their organic clothing certified by them. This guarantees that the manufacturing processes meet Global Organic Textile Standards. The Soil Association certification means that every step of the production process from sowing the cotton seeds to shipping to you has been carefully inspected to ensure organic standards. Other People Tree Achievements: - People Tree won The Observer Ethical Awards for fashion in 2009 - In 2009 the founder and CEO of People Tree, Safia Minney was awarded an MBE for services to British Fashion: 'I won't rest until The Queen has a closet full of her favourite Fair Trade frocks so she can go confidently about Her business overseas representing the strength and style of the British Fair Trade movement.'
